The Academic Council is the highest academic authority within an autonomous college. The UGC Regulations (2023) clearly outline the Academic Council’s functions and responsibilities.

• Academic Planning and Curriculum Approval. Scrutinise and approve proposals from Boards of Studies (BoS) regarding: (a) programmes of study; (b) academic regulations; (c) curricula and syllabi; (d) instructional and evaluation methods; and (e) return proposals to Board of Studies (BoS) for reconsideration or reject them with reasons.
• Admission Regulations. Frame regulations for admission to various programmes, consistent with government policy.
• Student Development and Campus Life. Make regulations for: (a) Sports; (b) Extra‑curricular activities; (c) maintenance and functioning of playgrounds and hostels
• Programme Expansion. Recommend to the Governing Body: (a) introduction of new programmes; and (b) discontinuation or restructuring of existing programmes.
• Scholarships & Awards. Recommend institution of: (a) scholarships; (b) Studentships; (c) fellowships; and (d) prizes and medals.
• Advisory Role. Advise the Governing Body on academic matters.

In essence, the Academic Council safeguards the academic vision, standards, and autonomy of the institution, ensuring that all programmes remain rigorous, relevant, and future‑ready.
